Building a proper base is one of the biggest milestones in Subnautica 2. The Lifepod is cramped, its fabricator is limited, and its storage is pathetic. A well-placed base with reliable power solves nearly every early-game problem and unlocks the full crafting tree.
Finding the Habitat Builder
The game does not hand you the Habitat Builder. You must scan two broken Habitat Builder fragments to unlock the blueprint. Here are the fastest locations:
Location 1: Welcome Center Ruins
Head southeast from your Lifepod. You will find a broken Habitat Builder inside an open crate just right of the main entrance. For the second scan, clear the metal scrap blocking the hole in the Welcome Center floor and swim down into the cave below. A second broken builder sits in a crate at the bottom — watch for poison spores.
Location 2: Gene Donor Site
Stand on your Lifepod and face 20 degrees between north and northeast. Swim approximately 160 meters to the massive Gene Donor structure. Scattered tools at its foot include a broken Habitat Builder.
Crafting the Habitat Builder
Once scanned, craft it at your Lifepod:
- Titanium x2
- Copper Wire x1
- System Chip x1
These require refined materials — process raw ores at the fabricator first.
Choosing Your Base Location
Location is everything. A poorly placed base forces tedious backtracking every time your inventory fills.
Build your first base a decent distance to the east of your Lifepod. The story and NOA missions naturally push you eastward. Building at your drop pod means massive return trips later.
Ideal base locations have:
- Flat terrain without large coral obstructions
- Proximity to key resources (Titanium outcrops, Quartz, Copper)
- Safe depth — shallow enough for solar power (under 200m)
- Multiple approach routes for vehicles
If the game says "location is under construction," you are in a restricted story zone. Move slightly and try again.
Powering Your Base
A base with zero power produces no oxygen. You will drown standing in your own living room. Establish power immediately.
Solar Panels (Early Game)
For shallow bases, solar is king. Each panel costs 1 Titanium + 2 Quartz and generates 1-8 energy per second depending on sunlight.
- Place panels on your base roof for maximum exposure
- Solar loses effectiveness at night and stops working past 200 meters
- Monitor power threshold: blue bar = production, red bar = consumption
Power Management Tips
| Structure | Power Draw | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Base Fabricator | Medium | Required for advanced crafting |
| Scanner Station | Low | Pings resource locations |
| Oxygen Generator | Low | Runs automatically when powered |
| Storage Lockers | None | No power cost |
Essential Starter Structures
Open the Habitat Builder with Right Click to access construction tabs. Start with these:
| Structure | Cost | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Room | Titanium x5 | Main habitable space. Holds large installations. |
| Corridor | Titanium x2 | Connects rooms. Fine for starters but offers no interior space. |
| Hatch | Titanium x1, Quartz x1 | Airlock entrance. Required for oxygen seal. |
| Solar Panel | Titanium x1, Quartz x2 | Early power source. Must stay above 200m. |
| Reinforcement | Varies | Increases hull integrity at depth. |
Construction Controls
- Right Click: Open build menu
- Q: Deconstruct a piece and refund all materials
- F: Move a structure to a new position
The Base Fabricator
Your Lifepod fabricator is damaged and cannot craft advanced items. The Base Fabricator removes all restrictions.
Recipe: Titanium x1, Copper x1, Quartz x1
With a Base Fabricator, you can craft:
- Wiring Kits
- System Chips
- Advanced vehicle modules
- Complex base components
These are strictly required for story progression. Build this immediately after power is online.
Scanner Station
The Scanner Station is a game-changer for resource acquisition. It allows you to "ping" specific materials on your HUD.
Available scan targets include:
- Silver Ore
- Lead
- Copper
- Titanium
- Quartz
- Gold
Before hunting for Silver, activate the Scanner Station ping. It transforms a frustrating blind search into a quick, targeted expedition.
Advanced Base Building Tips
Multi-Base Strategy
As you explore farther from your starter base, consider building small outposts. A single room with a fabricator and solar panel near a new biome saves hours of travel.
The Refund Warning
The Refund Bases option in the Escape menu destroys your base and returns raw materials to a cache. However, it permanently deletes all items inside lockers. Empty storage manually before refunding.
Co-op Base Sharing
In multiplayer, all players share the same base power grid and storage. Coordinate who builds what to avoid resource waste. The EA 1.2 update will add a base builder tool upgrade and pinned recipes for smoother co-op construction.
Depth Planning
If you plan to build deep (past 200m), start planning alternative power early. Solar stops working, and you will need thermal or bioreactor solutions in future updates.
