Subnautica 2 Co-op Multiplayer Guide
For the first time in the franchise, Subnautica 2 features optional online co-op for up to 4 players. While the game remains a single-player first experience, co-op fundamentally changes how you explore, build, and survive. This guide covers how multiplayer works, optimal team strategies, and what is coming next.

How Co-op Works
Subnautica 2's co-op is purely cooperative β there is no PvP. Players join a host's world and share progression, discoveries, and bases.
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Max Players | 4 (host + 3 friends) |
| PvP | None β friendly fire is disabled |
| Progression | Shared PDA entries, blueprints, and story |
| Bases | All players share power, storage, and fabricators |
| Cross-Play | Not confirmed for Early Access launch |
| Drop-In | Players can join mid-session |
Co-op is completely optional. The entire game can be played solo, and the difficulty does not scale with player count.
Optimal Team Roles
With four players, dividing responsibilities makes progression dramatically faster. Here are effective role assignments:
The Scout
Focuses on exploration, beacon placement, and mapping new biomes. Prioritizes Scanner, Flashlight, and Air Tank upgrades.
The Miner
Gathers bulk resources. Uses the Tadpole with Storage Modules for efficient material runs. Keeps the base stocked.
The Builder
Manages base expansion, power grids, and fabricator queues. Unlocks Habitat Builder first and plans room layouts.
The Guard
Focuses on defense, creature distractions, and dangerous zone escorts. Equips hull-reinforced vehicles and Repair Tools.
These roles are flexible. In a 2-player game, each player simply takes on two responsibilities. In 3-player, rotate the fourth role based on current objectives.
Shared Base Management
Base resources are communal. Any player can add or remove items from lockers, use the fabricator, or draw power. This requires coordination:
- Label lockers: Agree on organizational systems so players are not searching blindly.
- Power discipline: High-draw machines running simultaneously can brown out the base. Communicate before starting major fabrication.
- Build permissions: Currently, any player can deconstruct base pieces. Establish ground rules to prevent accidental demolition.
- Respawn points: Set up beds or designated respawn areas so players do not respawn across the map from the action.
The "Refund Bases" option in the Escape menu is global. Any player using it will delete the entire shared base and all items inside. Disable or agree on usage rules.
Progression & Discovery Sharing
One of co-op's biggest advantages is shared knowledge:
- PDA Entries: When one player scans a creature or data pad, all players receive the entry.
- Blueprints: Unlocking a blueprint is shared across the session.
- Story Beats: Radio messages, NOA terminal updates, and voice logs are synchronized.
- Adaptations: Each player must individually acquire Biomod and Adaptation upgrades at chambers.
This means splitting up to cover more ground is highly effective. The Scout can push north while the Miner gathers silver south β both contribute to the team's overall progress.
Co-op Survival Tips
Communication is Critical
Subnautica 2 does not have in-game voice chat at launch. Use Discord or another external voice solution. The EA 1.2 update will add proximity voice chat β the most requested community feature.
Leviathan Encounters
In co-op, Leviathans are slightly less terrifying β but only if your team coordinates:
- One player draws aggro while others scan, loot, or escape
- Never cluster in vehicles β AoE attacks can hit multiple players
- Designate a rendezvous point before entering dangerous biomes
Resource Coordination
With four players consuming resources, early-game scarcity hits harder:
- Prioritize building a large Base Fabricator early
- Each player should maintain a personal emergency kit (battery, air bladder, food)
- Share vehicle access β not everyone needs a Tadpole immediately
When exploring deep wrecks, leave one player at the entrance as a "surface watch." They can guide lost divers back and warn of approaching predators.
