Subnautica 2 is the long-awaited underwater survival sequel from Unknown Worlds, launching in Early Access on May 14, 2026. Set on the mysterious alien moon Proteus, the game expands the franchise with Unreal Engine 5 visuals, new biomes, dangerous creatures, modular vehicles, base building, and for the first time — optional 4-player co-op multiplayer.

Whether you are a veteran of the original Subnautica or diving in for the first time, this guide hub covers everything you need to survive, build, explore, and thrive in the deep.

Quick Start: First 60 Minutes

Your first hour on Proteus determines everything. The ocean is beautiful but unforgiving, and your starting Lifepod is barely functional. Follow these priority steps:

  1. Craft the Scanner immediately. It unlocks every blueprint in the game. Scan everything — fish, plants, fragments, wreckage.
  2. Find Silver for the Standard Air Tank. Your default 45-second oxygen is crippling. Silver is rare in the shallows, but the upgrade grants +30 seconds — the most important early-game improvement.
  3. Gather Water Slugs for hydration. These translucent blue slugs are the most reliable early water source. Cook them at your Lifepod fabricator.
  4. Unlock the Digestion Adaptation. You start with "Digestive Incompatibility." Follow the NOA signal to the nearby Angel Comb plant (around 180m north) to finally eat native fish.
  5. Find the Habitat Builder. Scan two broken Habitat Builders at the Welcome Center ruins (southeast) to unlock base building. The Lifepod fabricator is too limited for long-term survival.
⚠️ Survival Warning

Do not venture into deep biomes without the Standard Air Tank and a Flashlight. Night diving without light sources is extremely dangerous. If you hear a loud roar — turn around.

Beginner Survival Essentials

Oxygen Management

Oxygen is your most critical resource. Early-game suffocation is the leading cause of death. Here is how to stay alive longer:

  • Standard Air Tank: Requires Silver x2, Titanium x2, Rubber x1. Priority #1.
  • Oxygen Tunics: Blue glowing plants that release refill bubbles. Memorize their locations near your routes.
  • Air Bladder: Emergency tool for +20 oxygen and rapid ascent. Craft with Titanium and Lucifer Rotsac.
  • Plan your dive path: Always know your route back to the surface or a base airlock before descending.

Food and Water

Until you unlock the Digestion Adaptation, eating native creatures will make you sick. Your early survival loop revolves around:

  • Water Slugs — abundant, safe hydration source found on the seafloor.
  • Nutrient Blocks — save the starter blocks in your Lifepod for long expeditions.
  • Angel Comb — interact with this plant to unlock the Digestion Adaptation permanently.

Tools Priority List

Priority Tool Materials Why It Matters
1 Scanner Titanium x2, Quartz x2, Battery Unlocks every blueprint. Scan everything once.
2 Standard Air Tank Silver x2, Titanium x2, Rubber +30 seconds oxygen. Game-changing.
3 Flashlight Scan 2 broken flashlights Caves and night dives are pitch black.
4 Survival Multitool Basic blueprint Harvests Fibrous Pulp for Fiber crafting.
5 Sonic Resonator Mid-game blueprint Breaks Bloom Biofilm and large resource nodes.
💡 Pro Tip

Most major blueprints (vehicles, base rooms) require scanning 2-3 fragments of the same object before unlocking. Scanning something you already own rewards raw materials — a great way to farm passively.

Frequently Asked Questions

Subnautica 2 launched in Early Access on May 14, 2026, for PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store) and Xbox Series X|S. The Early Access period is expected to last approximately 2-3 years, and the price will increase after full release.

Yes, Subnautica 2 features optional online co-op multiplayer supporting up to 4 players with no PvP. The game remains a single-player first experience with co-op as an optional mode. Future updates will add voice chat, player trading, revive mechanics, and emotes.

Craft the Scanner immediately and prioritize finding Silver to upgrade your Oxygen Tank. Without the Standard Air Tank upgrade, your 45-second starting oxygen severely limits exploration. Follow NOA missions to unlock the Digestion Adaptation so you can finally eat native fish.

To build a base, you need the Habitat Builder tool. Scan two broken Habitat Builder fragments found at the Welcome Center ruins (southeast of your Lifepod) or near the Gene Donor (160m north-northeast). Once crafted, equip the Habitat Builder to place rooms, corridors, hatches, and solar panels for power. Build east of your Lifepod to stay close to story progression.

The primary vehicle available in Early Access is the Tadpole, a nimble submersible similar to the original Seamoth with modular chassis upgrades. A large submarine equivalent to the Cyclops is currently in long-term development and will be added in a future major update.

Yes. Subnautica 2 is designed as a standalone experience that does not assume prior knowledge. While Alterra and familiar crafting items return, the story on Proteus is entirely separate from Subnautica and Below Zero.

No. Unknown Worlds has explicitly confirmed: no season passes, no battle passes, no subscriptions, no loot boxes, and no microtransactions. The game follows the same update model as previous Subnautica titles — free content updates throughout Early Access.

Early Access is available on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store) and Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation is unlikely to receive the game until the full 1.0 release, as PlayStation does not support Early Access or Game Preview programs.
