Subnautica 2 Beginner Tips & Tricks: First Hours Survival Guide

Your first hours on Planet Proteus are the hardest. Between suffocating oxygen limits, digestive incompatibility, and creatures that want you dead, survival is not guaranteed. This guide breaks down exactly what to prioritize in your first 60 minutes to build a stable foundation.

Oxygen Management: Stay Alive Longer

With only 45 seconds of starting oxygen, you will spend more time swimming to the surface than exploring. Fix this immediately.

Get the Standard Air Tank

The Standard Air Tank grants +30 seconds of oxygen and is the single most important upgrade in your first hour.

  • Recipe: Titanium x2, Silver x2, Rubber x1
  • Silver location: Check caves and deeper shallows. Use your Scanner to find deposits.
  • Rubber: Crafted from Lucifer Rotsac x2 — red bulbous plants common on the seafloor.

Use Oxygen Tunics

Blue glowing plants release bubble streams. Swimming through these instantly refills your tank. Memorize their positions along your common routes to extend dive time without surfacing.

Craft an Air Bladder

Your emergency panic button. The Air Bladder provides a quick +20 oxygen refill and rapidly propels you to the surface.

  • Recipe: Titanium x1, Lucifer Rotsac x1
âš ī¸ Critical Warning

Never dive deeper than you can return from. A good rule: if you have used 40% of your oxygen descending, turn around immediately.

Food and Water: Solving the Hunger Puzzle

You begin with Digestive Incompatibility — your body cannot process native Proteus wildlife. Eating raw fish will make you sick.

Early Hydration: Water Slugs

Translucent blue slugs cover the seafloor in the starting biome. Gather them constantly and convert them into clean water at your Lifepod fabricator. They are the most reliable early hydration source.

Unlock Digestion Fast

Follow your Lifepod's NOA terminal missions. The signal leads you approximately 180 meters north to an Adaptation Chamber containing an Angel Comb plant. Interacting with it permanently unlocks the Digestion Adaptation, allowing you to safely eat cooked fish.

Save Your Nutrient Blocks

Your Lifepod contains a few Nutrient Blocks. Do not eat them immediately. Save them for long expeditions where you cannot cook.

💡 Pro Tip

Once you have Digestion unlocked, cook fish at your fabricator for far more nutrition than raw consumption. Cooked food also satisfies thirst slightly.

Essential Early Game Tools

Your progression is locked behind blueprints, and blueprints are locked behind your Scanner. Here is the priority list:

ToolHow to UnlockWhy It Matters
Scanner Basic Blueprint (Titanium x2, Quartz x2, Battery) Unlocks every blueprint. Scan flora, fauna, fragments, and wreckage.
Survival Multitool Basic Blueprint Harvests Fibrous Pulp from plants to craft Fiber.
Flashlight Scan 2 broken flashlights Caves and night are pitch black. Essential for safe exploration.
Standard Air Tank Find Silver, then craft +30 oxygen. Required for meaningful exploration.
Air Bladder Basic Blueprint Emergency oxygen refill and rapid ascent.
Habitat Builder Scan 2 broken builders Enables base building. See our Base Building Guide.

The Multi-Scan Rule

Large blueprints like vehicles and base rooms require scanning 2-3 fragments of the same object. Scanning duplicates of already-unlocked items rewards raw materials instead — a great passive farming method.

Inventory Management

You start with only 20 inventory slots. This fills faster than you expect. Here is how to expand:

  • Portable Lockers: Found in wrecks. Provide +15 slots each and can be dragged back to your base.
  • Biobeds: Located in Colonist Bunkers. Interacting with these permanently increases your character's inventory capacity.
  • Build storage early: Once you have a Habitat Builder, lockers in your base are essential for organizing resources.
⚡ Important

Using the "Refund Bases" menu option destroys all items inside lockers. Manually empty storage before relocating your base.

Exploration Basics

Proteus rewards curious divers. Do not rush in one direction — explore horizontally, vertically, and inside caves.

  • Follow NOA Missions: Your Lifepod terminal gives waypoints to Black Boxes. These always sit near vital blueprints, new mechanics, or Adaptations.
  • Check every wreck: Shipwrecks and abandoned labs contain research logs, resources, technology fragments, and blueprints.
  • Restore the Old Complex: Near spawn, an abandoned complex without power holds a Biomodule station and the powerful Dash ability. Return with a Basic Battery.
  • Use landmarks: There is no traditional map. Memorize terrain features and place Beacons at important locations.

Avoiding Danger

Proteus is home to hostile creatures and environmental hazards. Stay alive with these rules:

  • Do not swim into caves without a Flashlight. Disorientation kills more divers than creatures.
  • Avoid deep biomes early. Many areas are not designed for early exploration. Leviathans patrol specific depths.
  • Watch for poison spores. Certain caves and wreck interiors have toxic clouds. Bring health items.
  • If you hear a loud roar, turn around. Leviathans give audio warnings. Heed them.
  • Keep spare batteries. A dead Flashlight in a cave is a death sentence.
â„šī¸ Death Mechanics

When you die, you respawn at your last safe location and must retrieve your dropped items. Plan expeditions so that death does not cost you hours of progress.
