Subnautica 2 Copper Location: Where to Find Copper Fast

Copper in Subnautica 2 spawns inside caves and on shallow rock outcrops across the starting biome. It is the raw material behind batteries, wiring, and nearly every electronic recipe in the game, so a steady Copper supply matters from your very first hour on Proteus.

All Copper Locations on Proteus

Unlike Titanium, which litters the open seafloor, Copper hides in rock. Train yourself to look at cave walls and rocky outcrops rather than the sandy bottom. Use your Scanner to highlight deposits as you explore:

LocationReliabilityNotes
Caves in the shallows High The best early source. Check walls and floors thoroughly — caves are pitch black, so bring a Flashlight.
Shallow rock outcrops High Rocky formations in the safe starting biome. Reachable with your 45 seconds of starting oxygen.
Deeper cave networks Medium Richer nodes below the safe starting depth. Only attempt these once you have an upgraded air tank.
⚡ Oxygen Warning

You start with only 45 seconds of oxygen, and cave hunting is slow, careful work. Craft an Air Bladder (Titanium x1 + Lucifer Rotsac x1) before long cave runs, and learn where the nearest Oxygen Tunics are — the blue glowing plants that refill your tank on contact.

What Copper Is Used For

Copper is the electrical backbone of Subnautica 2's crafting tree. Almost nothing electronic gets built without it:

RecipeCopper CostWhy It Matters
Battery Copper x2 (+ Acidic Raion Pouch x3) Powers your tools. You will craft these constantly throughout the game.
Copper Wire Copper Refined wiring component — needed for the Habitat Builder and other electronics.
Wiring Kit Copper (+ Silver) Required for vehicles and advanced electronics.
Base Fabricator Copper x1 (+ Titanium x1 + Quartz x1) Removes the Lifepod's crafting limits and unlocks Wiring Kits, System Chips, and advanced base components.
System Chip Copper (+ Gold + Quartz) Advanced electronics component — the Habitat Builder itself needs one.

Notice the chain: the Habitat Builder (Titanium x2 + Copper Wire x1 + System Chip x1) effectively demands Copper twice over. See our Base Building Guide for the full unlock path.

Copper and the Battery Bottleneck

The single biggest Copper drain in the early game is the Battery: Copper x2 + Acidic Raion Pouch x3. The pouches come from Acid Raion plants, and the Scanner — your most important early tool — needs a Battery before it can do anything at all.

That makes Copper the gating resource for your entire progression loop: no Copper means no Battery, no Battery means no Scanner, and no Scanner means no new blueprints. Prioritize Copper on every cave sweep until you have a comfortable stockpile, then keep topping it up — vehicles and base electronics will keep eating it for the rest of the game.

💡 Pro Tip

Carry spare Batteries on long expeditions. Vehicles run on battery power, and tools die at the worst moments. A couple of extra Copper in the Lifepod locker is cheap insurance against a dark walk home.

Fastest Copper Farming Methods

1. Scanner Station Ping (Best Method)

Once your base has power, build a Scanner Station and select Copper as the target — Copper is one of its supported ping targets alongside Silver Ore, Lead, Titanium, Quartz, and Gold. HUD markers highlight every deposit in range, turning a blind cave search into a five-minute targeted run. Range is limited, so build additional Scanner Stations in outposts as you expand. See our Scanner Station guide for setup details.

2. Systematic Cave Clearing

Before you have a Scanner Station, sweep caves methodically: clear every cave in the starting shallows with a Flashlight, then spiral outward. Drop a Beacon at each cleared cave so you never search the same rock twice — there is no traditional map in Subnautica 2, so your own markers are your memory.

3. Passive Re-Scanning

Re-scanning fragments of blueprints you already own yields raw materials. It will not replace active mining, but it tops up your stockpile for free whenever you pass a fragment you have already unlocked.

â„šī¸ Inventory Management

You start with only 20 inventory slots. On dedicated Copper runs, drop cheap Titanium to make room — it is everywhere on the seafloor, while every Copper ore is progress toward your next Battery or Wiring Kit. Inventory upgrades from Biobeds and Portable Lockers make these runs far more efficient.

Copper FAQ

Copper spawns inside caves and on shallow rock outcrops across the starting biome. It does not litter the open sandy seafloor like Titanium, so focus your search on cave walls, cave floors, and rocky formations rather than open sand.

Build a Scanner Station in a powered base and select Copper as the target — Copper is one of its supported ping targets, and the HUD markers turn a blind cave search into a short, targeted run. Before that, sweep caves systematically with a Flashlight and mark cleared ones with Beacons.

Copper goes into the Battery (Copper x2 + Acidic Raion Pouch x3), Copper Wire, the Wiring Kit (Silver + Copper), the Base Fabricator (Titanium x1 + Copper x1 + Quartz x1), and the System Chip (Gold + Copper + Quartz). It is the backbone of every electronic recipe in the game.

Because Copper feeds two constant drains at once: Batteries for your tools and wiring for base building. Stockpile it early — every cave sweep that feels optional in hour one pays off when you start building a base and crafting vehicle electronics.
