Subnautica 2 Best Base Locations: Where to Build First
The best first base location in Subnautica 2 is east of the Lifepod — the story pushes you east, so a base there stays close to every new objective. Pick flat terrain near Titanium, Quartz, and Copper deposits, shallower than 200m so your Solar Panels work.

The Best First Base Spot: East of the Lifepod
Your Lifepod's fabricator is damaged and limited, so establishing a real base is one of your first big milestones — and location matters more than layout. The single most important rule: build east. Subnautica 2's story delivers its chapters and NOA waypoint chains progressively eastward, and a base planted west or south will leave you swimming against the current of the entire campaign.
A site east of the Lifepod gives you three compounding advantages. First, short commutes: story objectives, black box sites, and new biomes stay within quick travel range. Second, resource density: the starting region's caves, coral domes, and rock outcrops supply the Titanium, Quartz, and Copper that early construction devours in bulk. Third, depth: the shallows east of spawn sit comfortably above the 200m solar limit.
Before you can build anything, you need the Habitat Builder — scan 2 broken fragments at the Welcome Center ruins or the Gene Donor site (our Habitat Builder Location Guide has exact directions). For the build itself — Room, Corridor, Hatch, power, and the Base Fabricator that removes Lifepod crafting limits — follow the Base Building Guide.
Don't overbuild your first base. A Room, Hatch, two Solar Panels, and a Base Fabricator unlock 90% of the value. Pressing Q deconstructs with a full refund, so your starter layout is free to redesign later.
Site Selection Criteria
Whether you are planting your main base or a tiny outpost, evaluate every candidate spot against these five criteria:
| Criterion | Target | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Story direction | East of Lifepod | The campaign pushes east; your main base should ride that wave, not fight it. |
| Terrain | Flat and open | Rooms, Corridors, and expansion pieces snap together cleanly on level ground. |
| Resources | Near Titanium / Quartz / Copper | Bases and tools consume these three in bulk. Short hauls beat long ones every time. |
| Depth | Under 200m | Solar Panels (Titanium x1, Quartz x2) only work above 200m and are weaker at night. No power = no oxygen inside your base. |
| Approach routes | Multiple ways in and out | Leviathans patrol specific deep biomes. If one route roars at you, you need another way home. |
A beautiful flat plateau at 210m depth is worthless for a solar base. Always check your depth readout before placing the first foundation — and remember solar output drops at night, so oversize your panel count.
Multi-Base Outpost Strategy
One base cannot serve the whole map. As the story pushes you into new biomes, expand with satellite outposts — small, cheap, single-purpose bases that extend your reach:
Scanner Outposts
The Scanner Station has limited range, so each farming region deserves its own. A Room, Hatch, panels, and the station turn any biome into a HUD-ping resource buffet. Rotate targets — Silver, Copper, Titanium, Quartz, Lead, Gold — as projects demand.
Docking Outposts
Once you have the Tadpole, outposts with a Docking Station become recharging rest stops on long eastern expeditions. Carry spare batteries anyway.
Staging Outposts
Forward lockers near deep or dangerous zones let you stash loot mid-expedition instead of hauling everything home on 20 inventory slots. Drag Portable Lockers (+15 slots) from wrecks to furnish them free.
Because Q deconstructs with a full refund and F moves structures, outposts are zero-risk experiments — place one, use it for a chapter, then pack it up and redeploy deeper as the campaign moves.
Restricted Story Zones & Other Limits
Not every flat, shallow, resource-rich spot is buildable. Subnautica 2 includes restricted story zones that block construction entirely — attempt to place a structure there and you will get a "location is under construction" message. No upgrade, module, or trick overrides it; simply move your site outside the story area and build there.
Two more warnings before you commit to a site:
Never use "Refund Bases" carelessly. The Refund Bases option in the Escape menu destroys the base AND permanently deletes every item inside its lockers. In co-op it is global — one click can wipe the whole team's storage. Move your valuables out first, always.
Depth demands Reinforcement. If you eventually build below the comfortable shallows, hull integrity becomes a factor — Reinforcement structures counteract depth pressure on your base.
In co-op, base power, storage, and fabricators are shared — and so is the damage from Refund Bases. Agree with your crew before anyone touches the Escape menu's base options.
Base Location FAQ
Build east of the Lifepod — the story pushes you east, so your main base stays close to new objectives. Pick flat terrain near Titanium, Quartz, and Copper deposits, shallower than 200m so Solar Panels work.
Solar Panels only work above 200m depth and are weaker at night, so solar-powered bases must be built in the shallows. Deep outposts need alternative planning, and any base without power has no oxygen inside.
Restricted story zones block base construction entirely and display a "location is under construction" message. Move your build site outside the story area — no module or workaround overrides the restriction.
Build one main base east of the Lifepod plus small satellite outposts in the biomes you farm. Each outpost can hold a Scanner Station for resource pings, and Q deconstructs structures with a full refund, so relocating outposts is free.
