Subnautica 2 Habitat Builder Location: Both Fragment Spots
The Habitat Builder in Subnautica 2 is unlocked by scanning 2 broken fragments — both are at the Welcome Center ruins southeast of the Lifepod (one in an open crate right of the main entrance, one in the cave under the floor), with a backup fragment at the Gene Donor site ~160m away at a heading 20° between north and northeast. Once unlocked, craft it with Titanium x2, Copper Wire x1, and System Chip x1.

Both Habitat Builder Fragment Locations
Like other big blueprints in Subnautica 2, the Habitat Builder is not handed to you — you must find and scan 2 broken fragments with your Scanner. There are two known fragment sites in the starting region, and the first one contains everything you need.
Fragment Spot 1: Welcome Center Ruins (Both Fragments)
Head southeast from your Lifepod to reach the ruined Welcome Center. This single location holds both fragments required for the blueprint:
- Fragment 1 — open crate: sitting in an open crate immediately to the right of the main entrance. Easy to grab on the way in.
- Fragment 2 — cave under the floor: clear the metal scrap blocking the way and drop into the cave beneath the ruins. The second broken builder is down here.
The cave under the Welcome Center floor contains toxic poison spore clouds. Bring healing items, move through the clouds quickly, and don't linger while you line up the scan.
Fragment Spot 2: Gene Donor Site (Backup)
If a fragment glitched or you missed one, there is a third broken Habitat Builder at the Gene Donor site. From the Lifepod, face a heading of 20° between north and northeast and swim roughly 160 meters. The broken builder lies among the scattered tools at the site — scan it like any other fragment.
| Site | Direction from Lifepod | Fragments | Hazards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Welcome Center ruins | Southeast | 2 | Poison spores in the under-floor cave |
| Gene Donor site | 20° between N and NE, ~160m | 1 | Open water — watch oxygen |
Habitat Builder Crafting Recipe
Scanning both fragments unlocks the blueprint at your fabricator. The recipe itself is cheap on paper but includes one component that trips up new players:
| Ingredient | Amount | Where to Get It |
|---|---|---|
| Titanium | x2 | Seafloor everywhere and wrecks — see our Titanium Location guide. |
| Copper Wire | x1 | Crafted from Copper, found in caves and shallow rock outcrops — see Copper Location. |
| System Chip | x1 | Crafted from Gold + Copper + Quartz. Gold spawns in deeper biomes — check Gold Location. |
The System Chip is the real gate here. Start collecting Gold, Copper, and Quartz well before you plan to build, so the recipe doesn't stall your first base.
What the Habitat Builder Unlocks
The Habitat Builder is the single most transformative tool in the early game. With it you can construct every base structure, including:
- Room (Titanium x5) — the core building block of any base.
- Corridor (Titanium x2) — connects compartments.
- Hatch (Titanium x1 + Quartz x1) — your way in and out.
- Solar Panel (Titanium x1 + Quartz x2) — power generation; works above 200m only and is weaker at night.
- Reinforcement — hull integrity for building at depth.
- Base Fabricator (Titanium x1 + Copper x1 + Quartz x1) — removes the Lifepod's crafting limits and unlocks Wiring Kits, System Chips, advanced vehicle modules, and complex base components.
- Storage lockers — finally a place to offload your overflowing inventory.
- Scanner Station — pings a chosen resource (Silver, Lead, Copper, Titanium, Quartz, Gold) on your HUD.
For full structure costs and base layouts, see our Base Building Guide and the Scanner Station guide.
First Base Tips
Open the build menu with Right Click, press Q to deconstruct (full refund), and F to move a placed structure. That forgiving system means you can experiment freely.
Build your first base east of the Lifepod — the story pushes east, the terrain is flat, Titanium/Quartz/Copper are close, and the water is shallower than 200m so Solar Panels work. Remember: no power means no oxygen inside your base.
The Refund Bases option in the Escape menu destroys your base AND permanently deletes every item inside its lockers — and in co-op it applies globally. Empty your storage first, always.
Some restricted story zones block construction entirely with a "location is under construction" message. If you see it, just move outside the zone and build there.
Habitat Builder FAQ
You unlock it by scanning 2 broken Habitat Builder fragments. Both fragments are at the Welcome Center ruins southeast of the Lifepod — one in an open crate right of the main entrance, the second in the cave under the floor. A backup fragment sits at the Gene Donor site, roughly 160m from the Lifepod at a heading 20° between north and northeast.
You need to scan 2 broken fragments. The Welcome Center ruins alone contain both of them, so a single careful trip is enough.
The Habitat Builder costs Titanium x2, Copper Wire x1, and System Chip x1. A System Chip is crafted from Gold, Copper, and Quartz, so start collecting Gold early.
Restricted story zones block construction with a "location is under construction" message — move outside the zone. Also remember that a base without power has no oxygen inside, so build a Solar Panel in shallow water above 200m.
