Where Leviathans Patrol
Unlike the scattered predators of the shallows, Leviathans are territorial. Each one patrols a fixed territory inside a specific deep biome, which means encounters are predictable once you learn the map. The starting shallows around your Lifepod are safe — Leviathan territory begins where the seafloor drops away and the light fades.
The practical rule: the deeper and darker the biome, the more likely a Leviathan patrols it. Deep biomes also hold the best loot — Gold outcrops, advanced wrecks, and rare fragments — so the game deliberately forces you to weigh risk against reward every time you descend.

Audio Roar Warnings: Your Early Detection System
Leviathans in Subnautica 2 are designed to be heard before they are seen. Each one emits loud, distinctive roars that carry across its biome. This is not ambience — it is a proximity alarm:
- First roar: you are entering the edge of a patrol zone. Stop and identify the direction.
- Repeated roars getting louder: the Leviathan is active and moving. Turn around or reroute along the biome edge.
- Sudden close roar: it has detected you. Switch immediately to the survival protocol below.
Play with sound on — players who mute audio lose their single most reliable Leviathan warning. Bright vehicle lights can also attract predators, so kill your lights when traveling through deep water and navigate by terrain silhouettes instead.
The Leviathan Survival Protocol
When a Leviathan locks onto you, do this in order:
1. Turn Around
The moment you hear a close roar or see the silhouette, reverse direction toward the last safe terrain you passed. Most chases end quickly once you leave the patrol territory — Leviathans defend their zone, they don't chase you across the map.
2. Break Line of Sight
Never flee through open water in a straight line — a Leviathan is faster than you. Instead, dive behind rock formations, wreck hulls, or into caves. Breaking line of sight is the fastest way to drop aggro. This is why you should always scout escape cover before venturing into deep water, not after a chase starts.
3. Boost Away
Use every speed advantage you have. The Dash ability (unlocked in the Old Complex near spawn — bring a Basic Battery to restore power) gives you burst speed on foot, and a Tadpole with an Engine Efficiency module outruns trouble over longer distances. Combine boost with cover: boost from one piece of terrain to the next, never across open sand.
If a Leviathan kills you, you respawn at your last safe location and your dropped items stay where you died — often inside the patrol zone itself. Travel light in Leviathan territory so retrieval runs are painless.
Protecting Your Vehicle from Leviathans
Your Tadpole is your lifeline in deep biomes — and Leviathans know it. They will attack vehicles, including parked ones, so where you leave your sub matters as much as how you drive it:
- Never park in open water inside a patrol zone. Tuck the Tadpole into a cave mouth, behind a rock ridge, or against a wreck wall.
- Park outside the biome when exploring deep sites on foot — the extra swim is cheaper than a wrecked sub.
- Carry a Repair Tool and spare batteries on every deep expedition. Exceeding crush depth damages your hull, and a damaged hull plus a Leviathan is a death sentence.
- Build per mission: for Leviathan-zone runs, prioritize Hull Reinforcement and Engine Efficiency chassis modules over Storage.
If a Leviathan rams your Tadpole, don't stop to assess damage inside the zone — boost to safety first, repair second.
Co-op Distraction Tactics
Leviathans become dramatically easier to manage with a crew. In co-op, the core tactic is role rotation:
- Bait: one player deliberately draws the Leviathan's attention and kites it along the biome edge, breaking line of sight as needed.
- Loot team: while the Leviathan is occupied, the other players slip into the wreck, cave, or resource field and extract what you came for.
- Rotate: swap roles each run so nobody is stuck as permanent bait.
Assign a dedicated Guard role on deep expeditions — a player whose only job is watching for patrols and calling out roars. Since there is no in-game voice chat at launch, run Discord voice so roar callouts are instant. And remember the standing rule: leave a surface watch at wreck entrances so nobody gets ambushed on the way out.
