Subnautica 2 Creatures List: Fauna of Planet Proteus
Subnautica 2's wildlife on Planet Proteus falls into five categories: harvestable flora, edible fish, hostile fauna, territorial Leviathans, and the story-driven Blight. This guide covers what each category does, which species matter most for survival, and how to scan everything into your PDA Databank.

Harvestable Flora
Proteus's plants are not decoration — several are core survival resources. Prioritize learning these four on day one:
| Species | Type | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Lucifer Rotsac | Essential | Red bulbous seafloor plant. Two of them craft Rubber, and one is needed for the Air Bladder (emergency +20 oxygen and rapid ascent). |
| Oxygen Tunics | Essential | Blue glowing plants releasing bubble streams. Swimming into the bubbles refills your oxygen tank — memorize their locations along every route. |
| Angel Comb | Adaptation | Found in an Adaptation Chamber ~180m north of the Lifepod (follow the NOA signal). Interacting with it permanently unlocks the Digestion Adaptation. |
| Acid Raion | Crafting | Provides Acidic Raion Pouches — combined with Copper x2 they craft Batteries, so never pass one by. |
Beyond named species, use your Survival Multitool to harvest Fibrous Pulp from generic underwater plants — it crafts into Fiber for fabric items. Also note the hazard flora: poison spores form toxic clouds in some caves and wreck interiors, so bring health items when exploring enclosed spaces.
Edible Fish (After Digestion Adaptation)
Here's the catch that surprises every new player: you start with Digestive Incompatibility — eating native wildlife makes you sick. Fish are technically edible from minute one, but they'll hurt you until you fix your biology.
The fix is the Digestion Adaptation, permanently unlocked by interacting with the Angel Comb in the Adaptation Chamber north of your Lifepod. After that:
- Cooked fish from the fabricator gives more nutrition than raw, and cooked food helps your thirst slightly too.
- Water Slugs — translucent blue seafloor slugs in the starting biome — remain your main early hydration, converted to clean water at the Lifepod fabricator.
- Save your starting Nutrient Blocks for long expeditions where fishing isn't practical.
Unlock the Digestion Adaptation in your first session. It's a permanent character upgrade, and it transforms the ocean from a hunger clock into a food supply.
Hostile Fauna
Below the Leviathan tier, Proteus has smaller aggressive creatures that defend caves, wrecks, and deep water. General rules that apply to all of them:
- Bright lights attract predators — kill your vehicle lights when passing through dangerous water.
- Hostile fauna cluster around the loot you want: wrecks, fragments, and deep resource deposits. Treat aggression as a sign you're close to something valuable.
- Death respawns you at your last safe location, but your dropped items stay where you fell — travel light in hostile zones.
- In co-op, assign a Guard role and leave a surface watch at wreck entrances so nobody gets ambushed mid-loot.
Leviathans
The apex predators of Proteus. Leviathans patrol specific deep biomes and announce themselves with loud audio roars — if you hear one, turn around. You cannot kill a Leviathan in Early Access; survival means turning back, breaking line of sight with terrain or caves, and boosting away.
They also attack parked vehicles, so never leave your Tadpole in open water inside a patrol zone. For the full survival protocol, territory rules, and co-op distraction tactics, read our dedicated Leviathan Locations & Survival Guide.
Leviathan roars are a proximity alarm, not ambience. A first roar means you're entering a patrol zone; roars getting louder mean it's time to leave. Play with sound on.
The Blight
The Blight is Subnautica 2's story-driven hazard — an unnatural threat woven into the chapter narrative rather than an ordinary animal. The EA 1.1 update expanded Blight encounters, so if you last played at launch, expect it to show up in more places and in new forms. Because Blight content is tied to story chapters, expect each new chapter to push it further. Check our EA 1.1 update breakdown for what changed.
Scanning Creatures & the PDA Databank
Your Scanner (Titanium x2, Quartz x2, Battery x1) does double duty: it unlocks blueprints from fragments and logs wildlife into your PDA Databank. Scan every new species you meet — flora and fauna entries build your database and are shared with your whole crew in co-op.
The EA 1.1 update included a PDA Databank expansion and a priority voice log system, making entries easier to browse. And since Unknown Worlds has confirmed that later major expansions will add new regions, new creatures, and new Leviathans, your Databank is a living collection — revisit this page (and the roadmap) after each patch.
Creatures FAQ
Not at first. You start with Digestive Incompatibility, so eating native wildlife makes you sick. Visit the Adaptation Chamber about 180m north of the Lifepod and interact with the Angel Comb to permanently unlock the Digestion Adaptation — after that, cooked fish from the fabricator becomes a reliable food source.
Key harvestable flora includes the Lucifer Rotsac (crafts Rubber and the Air Bladder), Oxygen Tunics (bubble streams that refill your tank), the Angel Comb (unlocks the Digestion Adaptation), and Acid Raion plants (Acidic Raion Pouches for Batteries). Use the Survival Multitool to harvest Fibrous Pulp from underwater plants for Fiber.
The Blight is a hostile hazard tied to Subnautica 2's story. Encounters with it were expanded in the EA 1.1 update, and Unknown Worlds plans to keep growing Blight content through Early Access.
Yes. The Early Access roadmap confirms later major expansions will add new regions and biomes along with new creatures and Leviathans. The EA 1.1 update already expanded Blight encounters.
