Subnautica 2 Digestion Adaptation: How to Eat Fish Safely
To eat fish safely in Subnautica 2 you must unlock the Digestion Adaptation: follow the NOA mission from your Lifepod terminal to an Adaptation Chamber ~180m north and interact with the Angel Comb plant inside â the unlock is permanent. Until then, eating native wildlife makes you sick, so rely on Water Slugs and Nutrient Blocks.

The Digestive Incompatibility Problem
Your character in Subnautica 2 is not from Proteus â and your stomach knows it. You begin the game with Digestive Incompatibility, a condition that means eating native wildlife makes you sick. The oceans are full of fish and you can't safely eat any of them.
This is a deliberate early-game pressure mechanic. Food and water management is one of the first survival loops you have to solve, and the game gives you two stopgaps while you work toward the permanent fix:
- Water Slugs â translucent blue seafloor slugs found in the starting biome. Convert them into clean water at the Lifepod fabricator. They are your main early hydration source.
- Nutrient Blocks â a small stash of these sits in your Lifepod at the start. They are precious: save them for long expeditions away from home rather than snacking on them.
Your Lifepod's NOA terminal hands out missions and waypoints, and they always point toward something valuable â Black Boxes, blueprints, new mechanics, or Adaptations. The Digestion Adaptation is one of the first signals worth chasing.
How to Unlock the Digestion Adaptation
The permanent cure for Digestive Incompatibility is the Digestion Adaptation, unlocked at an Adaptation Chamber. Here is the full process:
- Check the NOA terminal in your Lifepod for the mission. It places a waypoint signal on your HUD.
- Swim roughly 180m north of the Lifepod, following the signal, until you reach the Adaptation Chamber.
- Enter the chamber and locate the Angel Comb plant growing inside.
- Interact with the Angel Comb. Your character permanently gains the Digestion Adaptation.
From that moment on, your body can process Proteus wildlife. The unlock is permanent â it is a character-level Adaptation, not a consumable or an item you can lose.
Adaptations are individual in co-op. Blueprints and story beats are shared, but each player must personally visit the Adaptation Chamber and interact with the Angel Comb to gain the Digestion Adaptation. See our Co-op Guide for more on what's shared and what isn't.
Cooking Fish After the Unlock
With the Digestion Adaptation active, fish become a renewable food source â but don't eat them raw if you can avoid it. Use the fabricator to cook fish first:
- Cooked fish gives more nutrition than raw fish, so every catch stretches further.
- Cooked food also helps your thirst slightly, which matters on long dives far from a fabricator.
Keep your Nutrient Blocks in reserve even after unlocking the Digestion Adaptation. Fabricators aren't always nearby on deep expeditions, and a block in your inventory is insurance against an empty food bar far from home.
Surviving Before You Unlock It
The trip to the Angel Comb should be one of your first expeditions, but you'll still spend your opening hours unable to eat. Prioritize in this order:
- Water first: harvest Water Slugs off the seafloor around the starting biome and convert them to clean water at the Lifepod fabricator. Dehydration is your most pressing meter early on.
- Ration Nutrient Blocks: only eat one when hunger is genuinely dangerous, ideally before a long trip.
- Push the NOA mission early: the chamber is only ~180m north, well within reach even with your 45 seconds of starting oxygen. Watch your air and don't get distracted on the way.
Once the Digestion Adaptation is unlocked, food pressure largely disappears and you can focus on bigger goals like the Standard Air Tank and your first base. For the bigger picture on how Adaptations fit into the biomod system, read our Biomods guide.
