Subnautica 2 Oxygen Tank Upgrade: Get the Standard Air Tank
The oxygen tank upgrade in Subnautica 2 is the Standard Air Tank: craft it at the fabricator with Silver x2, Titanium x2, and Rubber x1 to add +30 seconds of oxygen to your 45-second base. It should be the first major upgrade you craft — everything else in the game gets easier with more air.

The 45-Second Oxygen Problem
You start Subnautica 2 with just 45 seconds of oxygen. That is brutally short: barely enough time to reach a wreck entrance, peek inside a cave, or harvest a deep resource node before you have to turn back. Nearly every early death on Proteus is a drowning.
The good news is that the game hands you several ways to stretch your air supply almost immediately — one permanent equipment upgrade, one emergency tool, and one environmental trick. Prioritizing them correctly is the single biggest quality-of-life improvement in the opening hours.
Dive discipline also matters. There is no traditional map in Subnautica 2, so place Beacons at cave entrances, wreck doors, and resource fields you plan to revisit — every second spent re-finding a site is oxygen wasted. And remember the stakes: death means respawning at your last safe location and swimming back to retrieve your dropped items, so a conservative turn-around time beats a greedy one every single dive.
Standard Air Tank: The Real Upgrade
The Standard Air Tank grants +30 seconds of oxygen, taking you from 45s to 75s — a two-thirds increase in dive time from a single craft. It is explicitly the Top Priority early-game upgrade.
| Ingredient | Amount | Where to Get It |
|---|---|---|
| Silver | x2 | The early-game bottleneck. Caves, deeper shallows, wrecks, supply crates, and black box sites — full routes in our Silver Location guide. |
| Titanium | x2 | Seafloor everywhere and around wrecks. See Titanium Location. |
| Rubber | x1 | Crafted from Lucifer Rotsac x2 — the red bulbous seafloor plant. Easy to spot in the shallows. |
Silver will be what holds you back. It is deliberately rarer than Titanium or Quartz, so start stockpiling it the moment you see it — never leave a Silver deposit behind, even if it means dropping cheap Titanium to make room. If you build a Scanner Station later, you can ping Silver Ore directly on your HUD; see our Scanner Station guide.
Air Bladder: The Emergency Option
Before you have the Silver for a Standard Air Tank, craft an Air Bladder. It costs only Titanium x1 + Lucifer Rotsac x1 and serves two purposes:
- Emergency +20 oxygen when your tank runs dry.
- Rapid ascent — it pulls you quickly toward the surface, which can be the difference between making it home and a drowning respawn.
Carry an Air Bladder on every deep trip even after you get the Standard Air Tank. Death in Subnautica 2 means respawning at your last safe location and trekking back to retrieve your dropped items — a cheap insurance tool beats that walk of shame every time.
Oxygen Tunics: Free Refills in the Wild
Oxygen Tunics are blue glowing plants that release streams of bubbles. Swim into contact with the bubbles and your tank refills on the spot — no items required.
Because there's no traditional map in Subnautica 2 (place Beacons to mark important spots), the veteran move is to memorize Tunic locations along your regular routes. A dive that chains two or three Tunics effectively doubles or triples your range without any crafting at all. This pairs well with cave exploration, where the resources you need most — like Silver and Copper — tend to hide.
Most oxygen-hungry exploration happens in caves, which are completely dark. Scan 2 broken flashlights to unlock the Flashlight blueprint before serious cave runs, or you'll lose precious seconds just trying to see.
Oxygen Upgrade FAQ
Craft the Standard Air Tank at the fabricator — it costs Silver x2, Titanium x2, and Rubber x1 and adds +30 seconds of oxygen on top of your 45-second base. It is the top-priority early upgrade.
Silver x2, Titanium x2, and Rubber x1. Rubber is crafted from Lucifer Rotsac x2, the red bulbous seafloor plant. Silver is the bottleneck — check caves, deeper shallows, wrecks, and supply crates.
The Air Bladder (Titanium x1 + Lucifer Rotsac x1) is an emergency tool that provides +20 oxygen and a rapid ascent to the surface. Carry one on deep dives before you can afford the Standard Air Tank.
Oxygen Tunics are blue glowing plants that release streams of bubbles. Swimming into contact with them refills your tank, so memorizing Tunic locations along your routes effectively extends every dive.
