Subnautica 2 Biomods Explained: Adaptations, Chambers & Slots
Biomods are Subnautica 2's character upgrade system: permanent Adaptations are unlocked at Adaptation Chambers, special stations like the Old Complex Biomodule grant abilities such as Dash, Biobeds permanently increase inventory capacity, and everything plugs into passive biomod slots — expanded in the EA 1.1 update.

What Are Biomods in Subnautica 2?
Instead of leveling up with XP, your character in Subnautica 2 grows stronger through biological modification. The biomod system is built around passive biomod slots: you discover upgrade sites in the world, interact with them, and permanently change what your body can do.
The system spans several kinds of upgrades:
- Adaptations — permanent character traits unlocked at Adaptation Chambers (like the Digestion Adaptation).
- Abilities — active powers granted by special stations, such as the Dash from the Old Complex.
- Capacity upgrades — permanent stat increases like the inventory boost from Biobeds.
Blueprints, PDA entries, and story beats are shared in co-op, but every Adaptation and Biomod must be acquired personally at its chamber or station. Don't let a teammate "unlock it for you" — you each need to make the trip. More in our Co-op Guide.
Adaptation Chambers
Adaptation Chambers are the heart of the biomod system. Each chamber permanently unlocks a character Adaptation when you interact with what grows inside it.
The clearest example is the Digestion Adaptation: you start the game with Digestive Incompatibility, meaning eating native wildlife makes you sick. Following the NOA terminal's mission from your Lifepod leads you to an Adaptation Chamber about 180m north, where interacting with the Angel Comb plant permanently lets you eat cooked fish safely. We have a full walkthrough in our Digestion Adaptation guide.
Your Lifepod's NOA terminal gives missions and waypoints, and they always lead somewhere worth going — Black Boxes, blueprints, new mechanics, or Adaptations. Treat every NOA signal as a priority lead.
The Old Complex: Biomodule Station & Dash
The Old Complex near the spawn area is one of the most important early biomod sites, and it's easy to walk past because it arrives unpowered. To claim its rewards:
- Craft a Basic Battery — the recipe is Copper x2 + Acidic Raion Pouch x3. Copper comes from caves and shallow rock outcrops (see Copper Location), and Acidic Raion Pouches are harvested from Acid Raion plants.
- Bring the battery to the Old Complex and use it to restore power to the facility.
- Use the Biomodule station inside to receive the Dash ability.
Dash is a movement ability that pays for itself immediately — faster repositioning during exploration, quicker escapes, and less time exposed in open water. Make the Old Complex one of your first deliberate expeditions once you can craft batteries.
Biobeds: Permanent Inventory Growth
Biobeds, found in Colonist Bunkers, permanently increase your inventory capacity when used. Given that you start with only 20 slots, Biobeds are among the most valuable permanent upgrades in the game — and they stack with salvaged Portable Lockers (+15 slots each, found in wrecks) and built base lockers.
Full storage strategy is in our Inventory Upgrade guide — including the critical warning that the Refund Bases option permanently deletes items stored in lockers.
EA 1.1 Biomod Improvements
The biomods system is a live focus of Early Access development. The EA 1.1 quality-of-life update specifically includes biomod improvements and additional passive biomod slots, meaning more room to stack character upgrades at once.
EA 1.1 also brings expanded Blight encounters, enhanced wreck gameplay, vehicle docking and fabrication upgrades, a PDA Databank expansion, a priority voice log system, the Sprint ability, and a storage cache system. There is no confirmed release date yet — track it in our EA 1.1 update guide and the roadmap.

Biomods FAQ
Biomods are Subnautica 2's character upgrade system, built around passive biomod slots. Permanent Adaptations are unlocked at Adaptation Chambers — for example, the Angel Comb chamber ~180m north of the Lifepod grants the Digestion Adaptation so you can eat cooked fish.
Visit the Old Complex near the spawn area. It is unpowered, so bring a Basic Battery (Copper x2 + Acidic Raion Pouch x3) to restore power, then use the Biomodule station inside to gain the Dash ability.
Adaptations and Biomods are individual: each player must personally acquire them at chambers and stations. Blueprints, PDA entries, and story beats are shared, but character upgrades are not.
The EA 1.1 quality-of-life update improves the biomods system and adds more passive biomod slots, alongside expanded Blight encounters, enhanced wreck gameplay, and a Sprint ability. EA 1.1 has no confirmed release date yet.
