Subnautica 2 Multiplayer: How to Play Co-op With Friends
To play Subnautica 2 multiplayer, one player hosts an online session and up to 3 friends can join â including dropping in mid-session. Co-op is fully optional, there is no PvP, and the entire game remains playable solo if your squad is offline.

Setting Up a Multiplayer Session
Subnautica 2 was designed single-player first, with online co-op layered on top as an optional mode. That means starting a co-op game is simple: one player hosts the world, and everyone else joins that host's session. Friends can drop in mid-session â nobody needs to be present from minute one, and leaving doesn't break anyone else's game.
| Multiplayer Feature | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Player count | Up to 4 | One host + up to 3 friends. |
| Drop-in co-op | Yes | Friends can join a session already in progress. |
| PvP / friendly fire | No | Purely cooperative; no way to harm teammates. |
| Cross-play | Not confirmed | Not confirmed for Early Access launch across PC storefronts and Xbox. |
| Difficulty scaling | None | Difficulty does not scale with player count â a full squad is a genuine advantage. |
The full game is playable solo from start to finish. Co-op makes resource runs and wreck exploration faster, but nothing in the story requires a second player.
Co-op is available on every platform the game launched on: PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store (including Game Pass PC), plus Xbox Series X|S in Game Preview. Because cross-play is not confirmed, the safest setup right now is for the whole squad to be on the same platform and storefront.
Shared vs. Individual Progression
Understanding what carries over between players saves a lot of confusion mid-session. Subnautica 2 splits progression into two buckets:
Shared With the Squad
PDA entries, unlocked blueprints, story beats, and base infrastructure â power, storage, and fabricators â are shared. One player scanning a Tadpole fragment advances the whole team.
Individual to Each Player
Adaptations and Biomods must be acquired personally. Every player needs to visit Adaptation Chambers themselves â the Digestion Adaptation from the Angel Comb chamber being the classic example.
The "Refund Bases" option in the Escape menu destroys the base and permanently deletes every item inside its lockers â and in co-op this affects everyone. Agree with your squad before anyone touches it.
Voice Chat & Communication
There is no in-game voice chat at Early Access launch. Until it arrives, your options are:
- Discord (recommended): the standard workaround â set up a server voice channel for your squad before diving.
- Proximity voice chat (EA 1.2): an in-game proximity voice system is on the official roadmap for the EA 1.2 co-op update, alongside animated emotes and player trading.
- Beacons and PDA waypoints: in the meantime, place Beacons as markers and call out NOA terminal waypoints â there is no traditional map, so landmark callouts matter.
Because there's no map, agree on naming conventions for landmarks before you split up. "The wreck east of the Lifepod" saves a rescue mission later.
Squad Roles & Co-op Tips
With up to 4 players and no difficulty scaling, specialization is the fastest way to progress. The classic role split:
| Role | Focus |
|---|---|
| Scout | Runs ahead, scans fragments, marks locations with Beacons. |
| Miner | Bulk-gathers Titanium, Copper, Quartz, and Silver for the whole squad. |
| Builder | Manages the base: power, fabricators, storage, and outposts. |
| Guard | Watches for Leviathans and hazards during deep runs. |
Two rules experienced squads follow: always leave a "surface watch" player at wreck entrances while others explore inside, and always carry a Repair Tool on vehicle expeditions â Leviathans can attack parked vehicles, and a stranded Tadpole at crush depth ends a run fast. For deeper strategy, see the full Co-op Multiplayer Guide, and check the Vehicles Guide before your first shared Tadpole build.
Multiplayer FAQ
Subnautica 2 supports up to 4 players in online co-op: one host plus up to 3 friends. There is no PvP or friendly fire, and friends can drop into a session that is already in progress.
There is no in-game voice chat at Early Access launch, so most squads use Discord. A proximity voice chat system is on the roadmap for the EA 1.2 update.
Partially. PDA entries, blueprints, story beats, and base infrastructure (power, storage, fabricators) are shared between all players. Adaptations and Biomods are individual â each player must personally visit Adaptation Chambers to unlock them.
Cross-play is not confirmed for Early Access launch. PC players on Steam, Epic Games Store, and Game Pass PC, plus Xbox Series X|S players, should check official channels for the latest cross-play status.
