Subnautica 2 EA 1.2 Update: Co-op Features Preview
Subnautica 2 update EA 1.2 is the co-op-focused Early Access update, headlined by proximity voice chat, animated emotes, player trading, and player revive. It follows the EA 1.1 quality-of-life update on the roadmap, and no release date has been confirmed.
Last updated: September 5, 2026
What Is EA 1.2?
Subnautica 2 launched into Early Access on May 14, 2026 with fully functional 4-player online co-op â but with gaps: no in-game voice chat, no trading, no way to revive a downed teammate. EA 1.2 is the update built to close those gaps. Every confirmed feature targets the multiplayer experience or the tools squads use to coordinate, from HUD signals to pinned crafting recipes.
Co-op at launch is already fully playable: a host plus up to 3 friends, drop-in mid-session, shared blueprints and PDA progression, and no PvP. EA 1.2 doesn't fix a broken mode â it layers the social and coordination tools on top that a four-player survival game needs. New to co-op? Full EA 1.2 Feature List
Every feature confirmed for the co-op update:
| Feature | Category | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Proximity voice chat | Communication | In-game voice based on distance to teammates. Ends the reliance on Discord for pick-up squads. |
| Animated emotes | Communication | Non-verbal signaling for quiet players or cross-language squads. |
| Player trading | Co-op Economy | Direct item exchange between players â no more dropping Silver on the seafloor and hoping your friend picks it up. |
| Player revive | Co-op Survival | Bring back downed teammates instead of forcing a respawn at the last safe location and a dropped-item retrieval run. |
| HUD signal improvements | UI | Better on-screen signals for squad coordination â important in a game with no traditional map. |
| Base builder tool upgrades | Base Building | Improvements to the Habitat Builder workflow, building on the current Right Click / Q / F controls. |
| Pinned recipes | QoL | Pin crafting recipes so squad goals (like a Wiring Kit batch for a Tadpole module) stay visible. |
| More customization | Cosmetic | Additional customization options to tell squad members apart at a glance. |
What It Means for Co-op Squads
Discord Becomes Optional
Proximity voice chat means hearing your Scout's warning only when they're actually nearby â more immersive, and it makes the "surface watch" role at wreck entrances far more natural.
Trading Fixes the Loot Shuffle
Direct player trading streamlines role-based squads: the Miner hands bulk Titanium to the Builder without inventory juggling on the seafloor.
Revive Changes Risk Math
Currently death means respawning at the last safe location and swimming back for dropped items. Player revive makes deep Leviathan-biome runs with a buddy far less punishing.
Pinned Recipes Align the Squad
Pin the recipe the squad is working toward â everyone knows exactly what materials to prioritize on the next run.
Get your squad's fundamentals down now â role split (Scout / Miner / Builder / Guard), beacon naming, surface watch â so EA 1.2's tools amplify good habits instead of patching bad ones. Our Co-op Multiplayer Guide covers the full playbook.
Release Date Status
There is no confirmed release date for EA 1.2. It follows EA 1.1 on the published Early Access roadmap, and neither update is dated. What comes after is bigger: later major expansions add new regions and biomes, new creatures and Leviathans, new resources and tools, the next story chapters â and the large multi-seat submarine (the Cyclops equivalent), a mobile base with interior modules expected in a major update after EA 1.2.
Like every Early Access update, EA 1.2 will be free. Subnautica 2 has no microtransactions, battle passes, season passes, loot boxes, or subscriptions.

Yes â proximity voice chat is a headline feature of EA 1.2. At Early Access launch the game has no in-game voice chat, so squads currently rely on Discord; EA 1.2 also adds animated emotes and HUD signal improvements for non-verbal communication.
Later major expansions are planned to add new regions and biomes, new creatures and Leviathans, new resources and tools, the large multi-seat submarine (the Cyclops equivalent, expected in a major update after EA 1.2), and the next story chapters.
