Subnautica 2 System Requirements: PC Specs Guide

The authoritative Subnautica 2 system requirements are listed on the game's official Steam store page — check there first, because Early Access specs can shift between patches. Since it's an Unreal Engine 5 title, an SSD and a modern mid-range GPU are reasonable baseline expectations for a smooth experience.

Where to Find the Official Specs

We deliberately don't republish a spec table here, and you should be suspicious of sites that do. Early Access games revise their minimum and recommended requirements as optimization patches land — a table copied in May 2026 may already be wrong. The single source of truth is the official Steam store page for Subnautica 2, which lists the current minimum and recommended specs directly from Unknown Worlds.

The same applies to the Epic Games Store and Microsoft Store listings, though Steam's spec section is typically the most detailed. Check the store page before you buy, and re-check after major updates like EA 1.1 and EA 1.2.

â„šī¸ Why Not Just List the Specs Here?

Because we'd rather be accurate than comprehensive. Publishing a stale requirements table would be worse than pointing you to the live one — especially for a game that will be in Early Access for an expected 2–3 years with a price increase after full release.

Reasonable Expectations for a UE5 Title

With the caveat that these are estimates, not official specs, here's what the engine and genre tell us about what you'll need:

ComponentExpectationWhy
Storage SSD strongly advised UE5 games stream large assets constantly; an open ocean world makes slow HDD loading painful.
GPU Modern mid-range Unreal Engine 5's lighting and water rendering demand a reasonably current graphics card.
CPU / RAM Modern gaming standard Co-op sessions with up to 4 players and dense biome simulation favor a recent CPU.
Platform Windows PC / Xbox Series X|S EA launched on Steam, Epic, Game Pass PC, and Xbox Game Preview.

If your PC comfortably runs other recent UE5 titles, you should be fine. If you're on older hardware, the Steam page's minimum spec is the deciding line — not vibes.

Xbox & PlayStation Availability

  • Xbox Series X|S: available now via Game Preview (Microsoft's Early Access equivalent), launched alongside PC on May 14, 2026. It's also on Game Pass, making it the cheapest way to try the game.
  • PlayStation: unlikely until 1.0. PlayStation has no Early Access program, and Unknown Worlds is developing the game publicly through EA — see our PS5 release date page for the full reasoning.
  • Cross-play and cross-save: not confirmed for Early Access. Pick the platform your co-op crew uses — more in the multiplayer setup guide.

Performance Tips for Early Access

Early Access means optimization is ongoing. If your frame rate stumbles, try these in order:

  1. Install on an SSD. If the game is on an HDD, moving it is the single biggest fix for hitching and long loads.
  2. Update GPU drivers. UE5 titles benefit heavily from current drivers; check for a game-ready release.
  3. Lower lighting and shadows first. These are the most expensive settings in UE5 games — dropping them one tier usually buys more frames than touching anything else.
  4. Cap your frame rate. A stable, capped 60 feels better than an uncapped rate swinging between 45 and 90, especially in dense biomes.
  5. Keep the game updated. EA patches regularly include performance fixes; check the roadmap for what's coming in EA 1.1 and 1.2.
  6. Report performance bugs through official channels — Early Access feedback genuinely shapes the optimization pass.

System Requirements FAQ

The authoritative minimum and recommended specs are listed on the game's official Steam store page — check there first, since Early Access requirements can change between patches. As a UE5 title, an SSD and a modern mid-range GPU are reasonable baseline expectations.

It is not recommended. Subnautica 2 is an Unreal Engine 5 game with large streaming ocean environments, so an SSD is a reasonable expectation for acceptable loading and asset streaming. Install on an SSD if you have one.

Subnautica 2 is available on Xbox Series X|S through Game Preview alongside the PC Early Access versions (Steam, Epic, Game Pass PC). A PlayStation release is unlikely until 1.0 because PlayStation has no Early Access program.

Install on an SSD, update your GPU drivers, lower lighting and shadow quality first (they are the most expensive settings in UE5 titles), cap your frame rate if it fluctuates, and keep the game updated — Early Access patches regularly include performance fixes.
